Sky Mall

Taking in my 3rd flight in two weeks, one becomes very aware of his close surroundings. The cracker/cookie/peanut option that comes WAY before the drink option, the voluble business man with the ever-present earpiece closing one last deal before the plan takes off. (Because everyone knows, most business deals happen within minutes of take-off and landing.)
Some people master the shuffle down the breezeway, through the narrow confines of the single airplane aisle. Others have not. Let's focus on them for a minute. The non-business/leisure traveler. Let's call them the NBLT's.

Before the NBLT's even get into the plane they've parked at Circle Parking, plopped onto the shuttle bus after locking their car 16 times and pouring their over-sized suitcases onto the metal racks in the shuttle. After the 12-minute excursion to the terminal, now comes the ticket search. Skipping the easy-go-right-to-the-gate-without-any-issues-if-you-just-swipe-your-credit-card kiosk, the ticket search begins. Seeing that they've booked their trip with Expedia and have an 11-page dot-matrix print-out of every nook and cranny tip/trick of their upcoming trip they ask the gate agent for help. The gate agent asks for some identification and the NBLT pulls their ID from their neck lanyard they bought from Target.
After deciphering the cryptic code of the Electronic Check-In machine the multiple bags get tagged and the move to Security ensues. Making their way, after a quick bathroom break, to the never ending line, the NBLT's realize they need a picture ID. Wait! I have it right here! In my neck lanyard! Eureka. Now the de-feathering process begins. Take off your jewelry, your belt, your sport coat, your overcoat, your shoes (oops, should've worn your dress socks), and your soul. Then make sure that all of your liquids are contained in one place, wait, what? Liquids? Who said anything about liquids? You mean my over-sized thing of nail polish remover and Jergens lotion can't travel with me? WTF.

Phew.

We made it. After arriving 2 hours early to the airport and breezing through ;)

Next phase. The flight.

Convenience.

I like an escalator because an escalator can never break, it can only become stairs. There would never be an escalator temporarily out of order sign, only an escalator temporarily stairs. Sorry for the convenience.

Best message ever!

There is something to be said about the gift giving. Some people give books, some people give jewelry, some gift cards. Some people give books, some give flowers. But for Valentine's Day this year I received one of the most unique, incredible gifts of them all.

Below is a picture of the West Bank barrier, photo taken from the Palestinian side. That is Israel on the other side. You'll some some red script on the 8-foot high concrete wall. That is my present. Look closer.

The reason for messages on the wall is as follows, "You help to keep hope alive. 'Our' Palestinians want to send you one single, simple message: "we are human beings, just like you, with sense of humour and lust for life." That's why they do this, and enjoy it."
This is the young gentleman who left the message.

Our message.
Best wife ever.

3) You can screen your calls, check messages on the web.
4) Fun for everyone.

3) Sears and K-Mart stores will be gone in the next 2 years.
4) This is the craziest necklace on the internet. (see below)

Wheel of Fortune (Part 1)

We get to California on a dreary, rainy, dreary day. Shuttle off the plane to my find my Mom waiting for us at the baggage claim and we were off. Seeing that my Mom had already called the entire state of Iowa and let them know that we had landed. Upon fetching our luggage from the carousel we are on our way to the hotel. Joining the shuttle already full of pre-teen gymnastic youngens from Canada, we are on our way.

We arrive at the Culver City Raddisson and take it easy the rest of the night. Not before one last quiz with Rebecca and my Mother.

Thursday A.M rolls around all too fast and I'm up contemplating my Wheel of Fortune fate that will arrive in just hours.

I have two thoughts;
  1. I can freeze. Simply not answer any puzzles and just hit Bankrupt and Lose A Turn in consecutive fashion.

  2. I can dominate. Hone in on the puzzle and focus completely on exaclty what I'm supposed to do. Lose the nerves and go for it.

The shuttle leave the hotel at 7:15 am promptly. After my wife wishes me the best and gives me priceless advice....I head to the lobby. I join 10-12 nerve wracked people and we discuss the days events. I meet Laura from Wisconsin and Noah from Boston. We get on the shuttle and I realize I'm the only person with coffee. Will it be my extra edge? Or is this another worthless observation I've made this morning. We arrive ten short minutes later at Sony Studios. Shuffling off the shuttle or shuttling off the shuffle. We then stand for about 10 minutes in a parking ramp while the casting agents come to sweep us away. We get on another shuttle and go to Stage 4. We drive past many people....who I'm sure are "key grips" or "gaffers" or "best boys", you get the point.

As we depart our final shuttle for the day we enter the studio. With Wheel of Fortune emblazoned everything, I know we have arrived. We arrive in the "Contestant Room" to a platter of food and beverage. Kind of a vending machine on a table setup. Seeing that it's 7:30 in the morning, I'll stick with my coffee. Once seated the paperwork begins. We are made aware that six shows will be taped this day and we'll be told which show we appear on later that morning. We first fill out a form of our basic information. The make-up artists come in to the room and introduce themselves and say they'll be helping us become more beautiful.

(More soon)
